Callao has become a popular tourist destination in addition to welcoming tourists and locals. In the summer, La Punta has several beaches on the Pacific Ocean. A significant port served Callao during colonial times. Overland transport was used to transport goods from Callao to Panama, where they were re-shipped to Spain. Panama, mules transported goods to Callao via Panama, then they were transported overland to Spain. Because of all the trade, it became an affluent neighborhood and home to immigrants.
